Reuben Elbert Mayo, III
 

Reuben ``Bert'' Mayo, 67, of Middletown, CT, and originally of Greenville, NC, passed unexpectedly on December 27, 2009, of heart failure. Bert obtained a B.A. from Harvard University in 1965 and from 1965 to 1970 served honorably as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, as a Titan II Missile Launch officer and Missile Crew Commander. He obtained both an MA in Physics (1977) and Doctorate of Philosophy in Atomic Physics (1986) from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT. As a physicist he was interested in quantum-mechanical computations and systems development. Bert was very committed to helping the Brehm Preparatory School, Carbondale, IL, a high school for students with learning disability issues. He served as Vice-President and President of Brehm Parents and Alumni Association and as member of the school's Board of Directors, including a year as Chairman of the Board. This past summer he completed a rigorous Connecticut teacher certification course and planned to teach physics to high school students. Bert was an ordained member of the Order of Interbeing which was founded by the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, a world renowned Vietnamese Zen Master. He taught mindfulness practice to several groups in Connecticut. He is survived by his son, Brant Y. Mayo, of Somerville, MA, numerous relatives in North Carolina and many close friends in Connecticut.
